New Owners, New Hours

Welcome to the new and improved EcoBuns!  We now offer longer store hours (Tuesday-Saturday 10am-8pm). Keep an eye on the blog and facebook page for all the new and exciting changes coming to the store.

We will be bringing in more diapers, amber necklaces, baby carriers, laundry detergent, and more! We are making a commitment to you, our loyal customers, to do our best to keep our shelves stocked so when you make the drive to come visit us, we have what you need!

We will be offering more classes and groups for you.  Check out our classes/events page on our WEBSITE.  This page will be updated as we add more classes and groups.  EcoBuns is the place for Lakeshore area moms to connect and learn about all things natural parenting.

The End....

I was not quite sure when I would have to write this post... I started a few months ago and then plans changed, so I deleted and over the last 3 weeks have thoughtfully considered just how I was going to be able to break the news to all of you! I feel like I am lying to you all, so here it goes...

We are completely POTTY TRAINED! Yup... out of my beloved cloth diapers my 2 year old is! Everyday I walk into my living room, which so elegantly houses my stash of FuzziBunz, Bummis, Thirsties, Charlie Banana and the list goes on. The stash remains untouched and no longer begs for a wash to replenish what we had used the day prior. They all sit clean and ready for use, the only issue with that is that my baby won't wear them anymore! We are still in cloth at night so I have not been completely forced out of my tree hugging ways, but using one diaper a day is waaay different than 10! So in the huge excitement of  graduating my 4th potty trained baby, comes the sadness of not being able to use cloth anymore, I suppose having one more child would quench that cloth thirst, but then I would have to have a petition sent around for all of you to sign on my behalf and then present it to my husband. If you are up for the challenge, let me know!

There it is out in the open now, I am mourning cloth in my house, but very happy to keep helping you all find your ways into it! So to celebrate my minor exit of the diapering phase ( remember, we still use it at night) I want one of you to have a shot at a brand new BumGenius Free Time from my little one to yours!! FWWKM

Do you have any idea what this could stand for? FWWKM? Seems a pinch obscene upon first glance but let me assure you this is far better than what I really do want to shout! You have SAHM and WAHM abbreviations floating around everywhere, the two seem to conjure up immediate empathy from many and rounds of applause from the rest. What about the two combined? That is where FRAZZLED WORKING WITH KIDS MOM comes in.

Don't get me wrong here, being able to leave my home and go to work with my kids is a blessing, I know this, but did you just read right? GO TO WORK WITH MY KIDS.... This means endless potty breaks, the youngest pooping in her diaper just as I have someone come in and need details on pursuing a journey into cloth. You think that stink sets me off on the right foot with a new parent?

How about unpacking dozens of Snappis and realizing I was shorted 8 packs, only to find all 8 shoved into my printer the next day, of course I had already emailed the poor Snappi lady asking what happened to my missing packs! A ringing telephone is an instant trigger to a meltdown that requires both my hands, ears and eyes and an apology on my end to the caller and asking if I can call them back when my spawn finally come to their senses. There are many days I just want to pick up the phone and call my husband just to let him hear the mass chaos going on around me in hopes of getting some sort of sympathy and just to be passive aggressive mainly! This is serious, when the 2 year old has the 3 year old in a headlock I am sure someone is contemplating whether or not calling CPS is within their moral obligation... As I write this they are beginning to fight over a "pink bike".

Once I leave the store I can only hope that they will both fall asleep on our way to pick up the 6 year old, I have had enough toddler talk all day long and I just want some piece and quiet to enjoy the Kevin Kammeraad cd that is on constant reply in the car. What? You don't know Kevin? Well, then I suggest you google him and see what my listening pleasure consists of. My kids know his songs by heart and so do I.... I catch myself singing them alone sometimes.

Do you now realize what FWWKM means? If you catch any typos or grammar errors, just do me a favor and keep it to yourself, most of this was typed holding the 2 year old who got applesauce on my shirt!

What Kind of Deal is This?

As Thanksgiving day approaches us, so does the infamous "black Friday" swell of crazed shoppers racing out at 2am to stand in a long line outside of a giant box store. The marketing frenzy surrounding this day has been amazing and deserves a standing ovation. However, this same marketing frenzy has created a sort of expectation on all stores,including small independently owned ones to also have some sort of black Friday deal to draw in shoppers. The problem with offering such amazing deals is that from the consumers standpoint, we are left wondering if we are being ripped off all year long,just to wait for black Friday to realize what we "should " be paying instead of this hugely marked up price. Hence...the explanation behind our sales on Friday.

It is important for my customers to realize that when any product line is brought into our store, along with the product is an agreement signed by me, stating that I will abide by all MSRP rules and will not price my product lower than that. Could I price it lower and wait until I get a phone call or email busting me? Sure. Would that be very ethical or fair minded to other small businesses selling the same product? No. I have to wait for my manufacturers to authorize, yes, authorize a price drop on their product before I can then offer it to you in the store.

I believe in fair pricing and pricing that allows us to continue to serve you with a brick and mortar store so you can come ask questions, touch the actual diapers and build a local community that is proud to cloth diaper. However, when a manufacturer does allow temporary price breaks in a product, I do feel inclined to pass that on to you even when that means you will pay less than I did for certain products or the very same as I did. My hope is to be providing good customer service in an environment that you feel secure with. Now, I can't be speaking for any other businesses small or large but I just want you all to know that I very much value your business and take great care in determining what you pay for your products. In light of the Holiday, I am very grateful for you all!

Giving It A Go....

Today a good friend of mine who is a total "Tech" filled me in on the fact that my store has a Blog!!!

With the transition of sale from Kellie to me, and the things in between, I completely forgot she filled me in on the blog and gave me all the necessary information to keep it going! So, here we are 7 months later and I am attempting my first post! I hope I have not disappointed Kellie with my tardy debut!

That being said, I read blogs occasionally and follow only 1! It is a lot of pressure to take your inner thoughts on a subject and publish it to the masses for approval,let's be honest, all bloggers are looking for some sort of approval....So that being said I am a little intimidated on what I should be blogging about. If I stick to strictly store "stuff" you will no doubt get bored after a while, but, do you really want to read about how my kids are destined to be hairstylists when they get older? Why, You ask? Because I am on a constant scavenger hunt in my home for remnants of tiny blades of hair hidden under pillows and bangs that seem to stand straight up like a flagpole!Where do they get the scissors right?That might be another blog topic.

I recognize the fact that as mostly moms who will be reading this blog, we naturally seek solace in the mishaps of other peoples children. It reminds us that our own mishaps are perfectly normal if not petty compared to those of others! So I guess this blog might be a combo of business and play and with 4 daughters in this household, you can imagine where the majority of blogs will land!

So by now most of you have met me or been privy to the change of ownership in this amazing business. My husband Mitchiel and I bought EcoBuns from Mike and Kellie Rosenberg in May of 2011. We have 4 daughters ages 14,6,3 and 19 months old. My husband is the chef and one of the co-owners of deBoer Bakery and Dutch Brothers Restaurant in Holland,MI. This like our store is a family owned small business, but he has the opportunity to work every SINGLE day with his father and 2 brothers ( the other co-owners).

I came to Kellie in August of 2010 to purchase a trial kit for $25 for my 4 month old! At that time we had 2 kids in diapers and the fact that we were spending well over $100 on diapers a month and the double diaper garbage killed me ( not to mention the awful chemicals in them). After my 2 week trial I was hooked and returned to Kellie for my diapers and her knowledge! So, when the opportunity presented itself to purchase the store from Mike and Kellie in early 2011 as a family we found it to be a great opportunity for many reasons,but my husband being as smart as he is, knew how important it was for me to have my "own thing"! I promised to my family that this store would not overtake our lives or my responsibility as a stay at home, I still consider myself a SAHM for the record. So when I get questions about our business hours being limited,my only response is that they are mommy hours, because first and foremost I am a mommy!

So... Now that you have a sliver of a glimpse into the new EcoBuns family life, I just hope I can keep spitting out relevant blogs. ( My 6 year old just came up stairs and told me she has chalk in her eye...????)

Hey Everyone! I am so happy to announce that Youth For Christ Lakeshore Teen Moms (a non-profit group that serves teen moms in the Holland, MI and surrounding areas) won the Bummis Holiday Give-away! EcoBuns nominated this group for the contest because we totally believe in the efforts that the group makes in building community for a group of ladies who begin their motherhood experience in one of the least easy ways - as a teenager. These girls' lives change in the blink of an eye, going from hangin with friends and attending school, to getting up to feed and care for an infant in the middle of the night. The stress of being a new mom is huge even for an adult (I was 28 when I had my first and it was a huge adjustment at first!). Youth for Christ Teen Moms Group helps moms adjust to the stressful changes in their lives and offers assistance in meeting physical and emotional needs. I was recently at a MOPS meeting and saw two of the previous moms of teen moms speak. Their stories touched me and I am so happy that they are able to take the gift from Bummis and use it to their advantage. Bummis is such a wonderful and thoughtful company to work with, they have that personal caring touch that I really appreciate in business. CONGRATS TEEN MOMS!

Baby! Were keepin' it green one little behind at a time! WELCOME to the EcoBuns Blog. We are committed to sharing the many benefits involved with natural parenting and cloth diapering. We are so pleased with the benefits our family has had with cloth diapering and we want to share those benefits with others. Our family has saved over $2000.00 by cloth diapering, that is huge for our family as things are tight with the troubled economy. We have also noticed huge benefits to our son. He suffers with many food allergies, he was born prematurely and has breathing issues. His skin is healthy and he very rarely has bouts with diaper rash since we began cloth. We pleased to have read the studies that show that cloth diapers are beneficial to children who have breathing issues as disposables contain chemicals that are linked to asthma-like symptoms in lab tests. Finally, is the astronomical benefit to the environment that we feel we have contributed by using cloth diapers. ONE TON OF TRASH SAVED to be exact, and disposables don't biodegrade either so the first one ever made is just sitting somewhere in a landfill, YUCK! The earth is a beautiful place. Our kids deserve to have it stay that way, before they can make the decision to be "green" on their own, make it for them, use cloth. Keep their carbon footprint as tiny as the day they were born.
